Patience is a Virtue

impatience2

Patience – the art of slowing down and being in the moment.

Whose got time for that….

Don’t you find that Patience is like that elusive elixir that people search for and would love to have, yet nowadays it seems even scarcer to find.

To understand and unlock the gifts of Patience lets spend a little time with it’s shadowy counterpart, Impatience – that funny enough no-one wants to own.

In this day and age of instant gratification we can obtain virtually anything and everything we desire on tick or credit, with the push of a button or the slide of a finger, we no longer need to save and we know longer need to wait.

When we can get things so readily and easily wouldn’t you expect to see people happy and content, yet look around, nothing could be further from the truth.

You don’t have to look far, we all know someone that demands when they want what they want right NOW.

Maybe even ourselves:)

Instant results equals instant pleasure, but how is that working for us.

Technology and this fast paced world – is this to the detriment of people losing their patience AND their health.

We know longer Have to wait for anything and if we do the adverse effects ripple out.impatience

We see angry people, abusive people, people snapping under pressure, retailers, hospitality workers being victim to verbal attack and abuse, horns blaring, people recklessly racing to the next set of green lights.

Lack of patience unfairly inflicted upon others.

Which one of us likes to be put on hold or stand in a que. Which one of us is calm patient and relaxed when others hold us up.

So, do we actually need to be patient any more?

There are in fact many benefits for possessing the art of patience especially when all around is speeding up.

Let’s explore what is stopping us from having this.

Think of the last time that you rung to speak to a government agency, the phone company, tax department and you were put on hold – not by a human, but by a machine.

Do you remember how that felt? Did you wait or hang up?

What about when you are running late and you have an appointment and every thing you can possibly think of seems to get in your way. The kids are on go slow, the animals are under your feet, you lose your shoe, your wallet.

And for goodness sake – Where are the car keys!

How is your temper?

The question is….Would you be feeling patient calm and relaxed, or irritated, frustrated, angry and full of rageannoyed.

These darker emotions are the reasons blocking you from experiencing more patience.

So where have we lost this art of patience and how do we get it back…

It may come as no surprise, patience was lost by the time you reached the tender age of 7 – 8 years old.

Now what if I told you that these emotions of frustration, irritation, anger and rage have literally been programmed into you from this early age and they well up whenever we get ourselves into a situation where there is a delay or we have to wait.

These are symptoms of what is buried underneath. In most cases this is a ‘Fear of missing out.’ Fear is the motivator behind the impatience cycle.

Impatience sees everything as a threat of time running out. It’s like a bull at a gate ready to react.

Threats are stress and our nervous system can be wired with this stress 24/7. This inability to recognize and slow down has detrimental effects on our health.

Impatience runs with the pressure of no time for time wasters and no time for delays and we can expect everyone and everything to move fast to keep up with our pace.

Think elderly, children and our furry friends.

Finding Patience in an inside job.

Patience is known to be the master of success and we each hold our own memories, our families thoughts judgements and beliefs.

But just think of how long a relationship takes to grow, a successful business, a green crop, a child. None of these comes with the push of a button a slide of your finger. They all take planning time and patience.

Here are just some of the benefits of growing patience:

* Reduced stress levels & increased health

* Better mental clarity & reaction times

* Increased compassion for yourself & others

* Emotional & Mental stability

The true essence of patience can only be mastered by slowing down and taking the time.

We can observe Patience in children and our animals too, when it comes to patience let them be your guide. They already have it mastered.legit-patience

Some tips to help.

* Become aware of how Impatience shows up in your life, non-judgementally.

* Question: What will happen if I don’t get everything done?

What are I racing for? What am I racing towards? Do I need to compete? WHY!

* Uncover: Where did I learn this? What am I really afraid of? Who taught me this? Remember

Feel what you felt. Honour these old hurts. Can I let this go now?

* Be the hero of your story now not the victim anymore.

* Change: Become aware of Impatience and choose a healthier response.

Patience is a skill, it is knowing that everything will work out the way it is meant to and it is telling yourself that everything is okay.

Don’t give up.

It takes time, it take patience to be patient.
