Nuts – Soak or Not to Soak

Soaking nuts, grains, seeds, and legumesnuts-seeds

Soaking nuts, seeds and grains is well worth the extra effort when it comes to Loving Your Body back to Health.

For those interested in reading the reasons why, I have added that at the end of this article.

Let’s Get Started:

First and foremost…What are you wanting to achieve?

A small amount or nuts or seeds to try for yourself, grain for making porridge adding to soups, homemade bread, or snacks enough to store.

Once you have sorted that. Purchase or pick the best quality nuts seeds grains or legumes that you can.

Certified Organic/Organic is always best, or Home harvested. Do not skimp on quality whenever and wherever possible.

Now you want to soak your desired amount of nuts, seeds, grains or legumes in a bowl covering them with luke warm water.

Add either 1 Tbls of good quality sea salt  (Himalayan Pink, Celtic, NZ unrefined sea salt) OR, approx 1 Tbls of liquid whey previously strained from yoghurt or kefir.

Soak the nuts overnight or for a minimum of 7-12 hours, Seeds from 4-6 hours depending on the size.

Legumes & Grains between 24-48 hours often times 36 hours for grains with rinsing morning and night. Once dried these can be ground for flours or added to recipes, digested with ease and in a shorter cooking time.

Next drain the nuts or seeds, do the taste test (they are delicious) and either lay them out in a shallow baking tray for the oven, or transfer to the fridge where they can be stored almondscopyrightedimage2for 3-4 days for eating as they are.

Nuts are really Moorish when hydrated like this, the soaking brings out their nutty flavors even more.

However, I like to go on and slow bake or dehydrate them to make Crispy Nuts.

At this point you can add different spices if you wish or have them the way they are with a slight salty taste.

They are seriously good for you and I promise you, You will love them done this way.

So…Crispy Nuts are Yum!

Go ahead and heat your oven up to just around 60-80`C I set mine about 80. Low and slow is the way.

Almonds tend to take around 8 hours at this temperature slightly longer depending on the amount you are doing. Walnuts are normally ready in around 6 hours.

I love doing big trays at once so I have plenty to give away and enough to store as well.

All different seeds can be combined you can coat them in Tamari, spices of your choice or have them Naked and eat them the way they are.

Seeds can take longer so make sure you give them a stir up every now and then.

They tend to hold onto moisture and can bake together in a mass.

spice mixBreak them up when finished and store them in jars. I like to keep the seeds I’m not using in the fridge for added freshness and keeping them from going rancid.

If I have extra raw nuts seeds or grains that I am not preparing I keep these in the freezer just like Nature does with hers until ready to germinate.

Now to the reasons behind Soaking Nuts, Seeds, Grains & Legumes:

The reasons behind why I choose to soak nuts, grains and seed is due to taking my cue’s from nature and nature has her own defense mechanisms in place.

Nature has set it up so all of these seeds grains and nuts can survive the elements until proper growing conditions are present for germination.

All nuts seeds and grains have enzyme inhibitors and toxic substances locked in place, phytates (phytic acid) goitrigens and polyphenols (tannins) that are removed naturally by the elements of nature, one being the rain.

So what we are doing when we are soaking them is we are mimicking nature which soakingalmonds-300x300will then minimize these inhibitors and render them as digestible in the human G.I. tract.

When we decide not to do this and eat them as they come, these enzyme inhibitors can rob us of our own stores of precious enzymes and in many cases people are depleted in these already.

These enzyme inhibitors and toxins disrupt our digestive system and put a huge strain on the process.

Enzymes are an essential part of digesting all of our foods. In fact….

We need enzymes for Every action and inaction in our body.

Many traditional cultures knew instinctively to soak all seeds nuts and grains. This was a normal practice for them before they made bread or consumed them.

Nowadays there is so much controversy when it comes to eating grains and breads, You probably know someone if not you yourself, that suffers with gluten sensitivity.

This is a whole topic in itself so I am just going to keep it simple for now.

All grains contain phytic acid in the outer layer or bran. When grains are left Untreated phytic acid can combine with calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and especially zinc in the intestinal tract and block their absorption.

This is why a diet high in un-fermented whole grains may lead to serious mineral deficiencies and even bone loss.

The modern practice or belief of needing to consume large amounts of unprocessed bran for fibre often can improve colon transit time initially, yet in time may lead to irritable bowel syndrome and, in the long term, many other adverse effects.

So soaking nuts seeds and grains not only removes the phytic acids and neutralizes the enzyme inhibitors, it unlocks the beneficial enzymes, vitamins and makes the proteins fats and carbohydrates readily available for absorption. Neutralizing the toxins.

Soaking for slightly longer in regards to grains encourages numerous beneficial enzymes, increases the amount of many vitamins and the difficult to digest proteins such as gluten are broken down.

This makes the grains more nutritious, alive and readily available for you to absorb..

Alive Food means you get to ‘Feel Alive Inside’
